President Calderon (MX) Speaks

On May 20th it took about three hours of sweet tea and jazz to relax this YBC member after watching Mexican President Felipe Calderon slam Arizonans (and thereby Americans) in regards to the recent anti-illegal immigration bill. I only wished for more detail.
Calderon declared: “I am convinced that a comprehensive immigration reform is also crucial to securing our common border. However, I strongly disagree with your recently adopted law in Arizona." What a hanging sentence for all patriots who, along with myself, were likely bursting with “WHY’S!” and “What part of 12 million illegal squatters and thousands of grams of drugs trafficked daily does he not understand?”

Calderon went on to say that booming economies would decrease illegal immigration, to that I say-duh! But the extra financial baggage carried in the U.S. by supporting over ten million extra bodies would be a great burden released for our side of the border, anyway. Finally, Calderon suggested the “high demand for drugs here and elsewhere” is the underlying root of the violence rampant in the Southwest. Now this is a sensible claim, oddly enough Arizona’s western neighbors in California, instead of committing to a drug-free America, (a resolve that would likely decrease border crime) is creating grey areas through their economic policies for the use of drugs most popular in Mexico, and further enticing Mexican citizens to stock up and ship their plants this-a-way.

More recently, I am pleased Obama has decided to act on this National Security crisis and send 1200 troops to the Arizona border along with 500 million in funds. While the exact role of the guard is vague, they are undoubtedly to help with security, surveillance and crime stopping as drug trafficking reaches an all-time-high.

While his motives are questioned (as should those of all politicians be, especially in an election year), I am pleased to see some action finally taken. After all, however ill-conceived Calderon insists Brewer and Arizonan citizens legislation is, they’ve no one to blame but Washington, for allowing such a desperate situation, to worsen.
